Indicative profile: it situates the “Persuasion techniques” family as the Undocumented origin school practises it, not this technique taken in isolation. Techniques from the same family and school therefore share the same profile. NEGOCOACH editorial rating out of 10, non-experimental · the higher the “relational risk” value, the more costly the technique is to the relationship.

NEGOCOACH assessment

How to read this rating

Tactical potential 7.0/10 (effectiveness, impact, discretion) and vigilance moderate (relational and ethical risk): two distinct readings, deliberately never merged into a single score that would reward risk. NEGOCOACH editorial rating calibrated from the “Persuasion techniques” family and the “Undocumented origin” school. Each criterion is rated out of 10; click to understand what it measures.

  • Effectiveness 8/10 · Very high

How far the technique can carry the negotiation in the intended direction when it is well executed.

  • Psychological impact 7/10 · High

Strength of the effect produced on the counterpart's perceptions, emotions and decisions.

  • Discretion 6/10 · High

How hard it is for the other party to notice the technique is being used. A high value = very discreet.

  • Preparation 5/10 · Moderate

The information, analysis and rehearsal required upfront to use it effectively.

  • Relational risk 4/10 · Moderate

Potential cost to the relationship and to trust if the technique is spotted, refused or fails. A high value = riskier.

  • Ethics 5/10 · Moderate

Moral acceptability: fairness, transparency and respect for the counterpart's autonomy. A high value = more defensible.

Level of evidence

Undocumented origin · level not established

The origin of this technique is not yet documented in our reference base: we therefore show no grounding level rather than assume one.

Indicative NEGOCOACH editorial rating, for teaching purposes. For “Relational risk”, a high value signals a cost to the relationship, not a quality.

The OBJECTION ANTICIPATION Technique

Definition and Origin

Rooted in the techniques of persuasion and principled negotiation, this method is used in sales, labour negotiation and conflict management to reduce the scope for dispute and reinforce the credibility of a proposal.

Concrete examples of application

Application by context

The same technique, across several negotiation settings

Context 1 / 3

Sales negotiation

  • Practical case: A salesperson knows that their product is more expensive than the competition. They take the initiative by saying:
    • "You are probably wondering why our price is a little higher. It is because we use high-quality materials and include a five-year warranty."
  • Effects of this technique:
The customer no longer needs to ask the question and sees the price argument as justified.

Context 2 / 3

Labour negotiation

  • Practical case: An employer knows that the unions will ask why a bonus cannot be increased. They answer before the question is even raised:
    • "We would have liked to grant a higher bonus, but our budgetary margin is limited. On the other hand, we have found an advantageous alternative by improving the meal vouchers."
  • Effects of this technique:
The unions focus on the proposal rather than on contesting the bonus.

Context 3 / 3

Political negotiation

  • Practical case: A political candidate introduces a reform by anticipating a major criticism:
    • "Some will say that this reform is too costly. But in reality, it will save millions over the long term."
  • Effects of this technique:
The attack is defused before it is even formulated.

Counter-techniques

Spot and neutralise this technique

Negotiation is also played on defence. Here is how to recognise this technique when it is used against you, and turn it around.

Detect

The signals that give it away

  • A string of easy "yeses"
  • Social proof ("everyone signs")
  • Commitment obtained step by step

Neutralise

The counters that defuse it

  • Spot the small-yes → big-yes mechanism
  • Refuse to commit in stages
  • Ask to settle everything in one block

Turn around

Turn it into an advantage

Demand a counterpart for each of your "yeses".

The trap to avoid

Accepting small commitments that lock you in.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths:

  • Allows you to control the debate and avoid immediate opposition.
  • Reinforces credibility by showing that you have thought through the counter-arguments.

Weaknesses:

  • Risk of highlighting an objection that the counterpart would not have considered.
  • Can be ineffective if the counterpart perceives the anticipation as an evasion.

When should this technique be used?

When you know that an objection is going to be raised and you want to neutralise it before it gains momentum.
When a counterpart is critical and you want to give them a pre-emptive answer to avoid an unfavourable debate.

Anticipating objections is particularly effective in conflictual negotiations, sales of products in highly competitive markets and political speeches, because it prevents a dispute before it even takes shape.

Aims of the technique

  • Defuse resistance before it crystallises into defensive positions, by addressing the objection while it is still only a latent doubt
  • Reinforce credibility and the impression of command by showing that you have considered the counter-arguments (perceived-competence effect)
  • Regain the initiative and control of the discussion's agenda rather than enduring attacks point by point
  • Immunise the counterpart against future counter-arguments from a competitor or a third party (inoculation effect)
  • Save time and gain fluidity by avoiding repeated deadlocks on predictable points

Famous cases

Sales · The salesperson who announces the high price before the question: A B2B salesperson presenting a premium software solution knows that the price, appreciably above the competition, will be the first sticking point. Rather than waiting for the objection, they build it in from the outset: "You will notice that our price is around 30% above the market. That is a deliberate choice, and here are the three concrete reasons why our clients reckon it saves them more over twelve months." By raising the objection and its rebuttal themselves, they turn an anticipated stumbling block into a value argument, and deprive the buyer of the element of surprise that would have hardened their position.

Legal · The barrister who defuses the weakness in their case: Before a jury, a defence barrister knows that the opposing side will exploit their client's chequered past. Instead of letting the prosecution reveal it like a bombshell, they address it themselves in their opening speech: they acknowledge the fact, put it in context and explain why it is not relevant to the case being tried. This technique, known in rhetoric as prolepsis, robs the opponent of the dramatic effect of the revelation and presents the speaker as transparent and honest.

Common mistakes

  • Anticipating objections that the counterpart did not have in mind, and thereby creating them out of thin air by sowing a doubt that did not exist
  • Multiplying anticipated objections to the point of appearing defensive or suggesting that the case is fragile
  • Rebutting the objection in a caricatured form (straw man), which weakens credibility when the counterpart puts forward their real, more robust version
  • Naming the objection without having prepared a convincing answer, which amounts to reinforcing it
  • Adopting a defensive or apologetic tone instead of a confident one, betraying anxiety and inviting the attack

Limits and ethics

This is one of the most defensible techniques in the repertoire, and that must be said before marking out its limits: addressing an objection before it hardens means acknowledging that it is well-founded, showing that you have worked through the case from the other party's point of view, and sparing them from having to battle to be heard. It adds nothing to the offer, but it deceives no one: the objections addressed are genuine. The limit is more subtle and worth knowing. Formulating the objection on the other party's behalf also means formulating it in your own terms, often in its weakest form, and thereby draining it of the force it would have had in theirs. The counterpart, seeing their doubt already named and already settled, gives up reformulating it, and leaves with a reservation still intact but now unspeakable. The technique then tips over from preparation into the confiscation of speech. The remedy is simple: after anticipating, open up explicitly ("and on your side, what have I missed?"). Addressing an objection before it wounds is preparation; formulating it on the other party's behalf in order to weaken it is a confiscation.
